Summer Work Biochemistry

AP Biology Summer Assignment 2017-18. 
This will be due Monday, August 14th, after the first week of school since we had some trouble with the documents page opening.  This is about 5-7 hours of work, so about 20-30 minutes a day if you don't wait till the last minute. 

All of the information for the summer work is found under the documents page on my webpage.

 Step 1. Students go to:

3. Click on “Covered Titles”
4. Choose “Science” and the correct title and edition
5. Choose “Student Registration” and scroll to the bottom and choose “I ACCEPT”.
6. For access information ? Do you have a Pearson Education Account – CHOOSE NO (unless you created one already for another class) ? Create a login name *if it is already chosen put some numbers at the end, or something to make it unique and memorable ? Password with at least one Cap and one Number ? Write down both your username and password for later reference.

Part One: (50 points) for the first day of class grade

Read over the essential knowledge information from the Biochemistry Unit and gather information on topics from 4.B.1, 4.A.1, 2.A.3  You can go to the internet, books and

other resources for information about these topics. Bring your ideas and notes to the first day of class for a simulated AP essay question. You will be asked to look over your notes one last time, and then write a

sample essay answer in class from two of these topics.  You will have 20 minutes for writing your essay.

 You will staple your notes or outline information to the essay when done. You will not get to use your information during the actual writing of the essay.


You will get to choose two of the following essay topics:


1. Describe the following five major groups of compounds that compose the human body. Include

their functions in your essay, but focus on how their chemical structure promotes a human cell and a

human body to function.

a. carbohydrates b. lipids c. proteins d. nucleotides e. steroids/hormones

2. The unique properties (characteristics) of water make life possible on Earth. Select three properties

of water and:

a. for each property, identify and define the property and explain it in terms of the

physical/chemical nature of water.

b. for each property, describe one example of how the property affects the functioning of living


3. Chemical bonds are essential to building the molecules for life. In 3 paragraphs, describe the following bond types and the significance each has to life on earth: ionic, covalent (polar and nonpolar), hydrogen, and van der Waals (interactions). List three examples of how each type of bond or force is functions in living things.

4. Carbon is a very important element in living systems. Describe the various

characteristics of the carbon atom that make possible the building of a variety of biological molecules, thus life as we know it.

5. Chemicals reactions may be endergonc or exergonic. Metabolic pathways may be catabolic or anabolic. What is the difference between these reactions and pathways? List two examples of each.


Part Two: (50 points)

You will take 5 (10) point quizzes on these the first few weeks of school, so you need to know all of them. We will add some information about these in class.
